Alice Springs now occupies the land the Arrernte people call Mparntwe - the place where the caterpillar beings originated and where mountain ranges were formed by wild-dog fights: with places for women and places for men, and places of broken promises by impatient and disbelieving developers. An awareness of even a little of this living topography enhances the aesthetic appreciation of the beauty of the Mparntwe environment, and creates a feeling of empathy with the culture of the Arrernte custodians.
