Mick Namarari Tjapaltjarri
(ca. 1927-1998)
Mick Namarari Tjapaltjarri, ein Pintupi, wurde um 1927 in Marnpi im Südwesten von Mt Rennie geboren; er starb 1998. Während seiner Jugend lebte er in der Gegend von Haasts Bluff und auf der Missionsstation Hermannsburg (heute: Ntaria) westlich von Alice Springs. Er wurde in Areyonga initiiert, besuchte bis zum Alter von elf Jahren die Missionsschule in Hermanssburg und arbeitete auf verschiedenen Farmen. Zu Beginn der 1970er Jahre lebte er in Papunya und war dort später gewähltes Ratsmitglied. Gemeinsam mit Johnny Warangkula Tjupurrula, Tim Leura Tjapaltjarri, Kaapa Tjampitjinpa, Billy Stockman Tjapaltjarri, Old Mick Tjakamarra, Uta Uta Tjangala, Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri und anderen gehörte er zu den ersten Künstlern der neuen Kunstbewegung. 1981 reiste Mick Namarari Tjapaltjarri mit zwei anderen Künstlern nach Sydney zur wahrscheinlich ersten dortigen Ausstellung mit sog. Desert-Malerei, die gegen den Willen der weißen Verwaltung durchgeführt wurde und deren Erlöse einen von indigenen Australiern kontrollierten medizinischen Dienst förderte. Als viele der Pintupi nach Walungurru (Kintore) zurück in das ihnen zugehörige Land zogen, blieb Mick Namarari Tjapaltjarri zusammen mit Turkey Tolson Tjupurrula noch einige Zeit in Papunya. Später zog auch er zurück in die Gegend von Marnpi. 1989 führte ihn eine Reise nach Melbourne zu einer Ausstellung von Papunya Tula Artists, der ersten Künstlerkooperative unter den indigenen Australiern, in der National Gallery of Victoria. Er besuchte mehrfach Sydney und Melbourne, wenn seine Werke ausgestellt wurden. 1991 hatte er seine erste Einzelausstellung.
